It has been widely reported in several media sources that GPs will be able to prescribe weight loss injections, specifically Mounjaro, from 23rd June 2025.
GPs have actually only been given permission to prescribe for an extremely small number of patients. These are people with a BMI of more than 40, and 4 out of 5 of the following issues:
- High cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Cardiovascular disease (heart and blood vessel disease)
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus
We will be reaching out to those patients who qualify. We won’t be able to prescribe for anyone else at this current time. NHS England plan to expand the number of people GPs can prescribe for over a number of years.
